Buying Gold in Kenya: A Buyer's Verification Checklist

A buyer's practical checklist for reviewing gold sellers, assay evidence, transaction roles and export considerations in Kenya.

5 min read · Knowledge Centre resource

Buying gold in Kenya requires more than agreeing a price. The buyer needs to identify who is legally offering the material, how that material will be inspected and tested, and what must be true before payment and handover. International buyers also need to identify the exporter and confirm the rules for the specific shipment and destination.

Before you visit or send funds

Ask for the proposed seller's legal name, company or licence details where applicable, authorised representative, material description, approximate quantity and current location. Confirm whether the seller owns the gold, deals in it for another owner, or only introduces a counterparty. If the proposal relies on another party's authority, the chain should be explainable and documented.

Kenya's State Department for Mining administers mineral dealing and export permissions, while the Mining Cadastre Portal is an official channel for mining-rights administration. Do not confuse company registration, dealing permission and consignment export approval.

Arrange independent material verification

Ask how the offered parcel will be identified before sampling. Where appropriate, begin with XRF analysis for screening and consider representative Fire Assay when a stronger quantitative basis is required. Agree who draws and seals samples and which report will control the transaction. The contract should explain what happens if the delivery lot does not match the tested material.

Review payment, custody and export responsibilities

The buyer should establish where payment goes, who will hold the gold, what triggers release and what happens if approvals or shipment arrangements fail. For exports, confirm the exporter of record, the intended delivery term, the relevant Kenya export permissions and the destination country's import rules. A buyer should not assume that a seller's existing licence covers every commercial role.

Documents to request for review

Depending on the transaction, useful records may include the proposed seller's legal identity, authority to deal, available source information, laboratory report and sampling references, lot weight record, commercial terms, and applicable permission or shipment paperwork. These are review categories, not a universal list of mandatory documents. Seek current transaction-specific advice.

How Bilex can help

Bilex can review a Buy Gold enquiry or sourcing brief, help identify relevant sellers and discuss testing requirements. For larger purchases, its usual role is to introduce buyers and sellers. Bilex may separately purchase selected small quantities directly from gold owners. If Bilex has a commercial interest in material being tested, that interest should be disclosed and any required independent third-party verification arranged separately.
