Exporting Gold From Tanzania: Preparing a Consignment File

Prepare a Tanzania gold export consignment file with exporter eligibility, mineral permits, lot records and commercial documentation.

5 min read · Knowledge Centre resource

An exporter needs to know what is being shipped, who is legally responsible, which approvals apply and how the destination will receive the consignment. A strong export file links these facts rather than collecting unrelated certificates.

Start with exporter eligibility

Identify the exporter of record, material owner, legal business name and the authorised signatory. Check the appropriate current trading and export procedures with the Tanzania Mining Commission and its mineral export procedure guidance. The licence category and approval process can depend on the material and the activity.

A mineral dealer licence and a mineral export permit serve different purposes. The dealer licence addresses eligibility to conduct specified mineral dealing activities; the export permit concerns the proposed consignment. Tanzania's Mining Commission states that holders of broker licences are not authorised to export minerals. Check the material description, declared exporter and current permission against the Commission's records before arranging dispatch. Company registration and tax documents help establish business identity, but they are not replacements for mineral-trade permission.

Do not use old blog estimates for royalties, inspection fees or permit charges without checking the current official basis, timing and payer.

Identify the consignment

Record material form, quantity, location, sample references and the planned packaging or security arrangements. Where independent compositional evidence is needed, agree the method and sampling plan with an appropriate laboratory. XRF and Fire Assay have different analytical roles; the chosen evidence must relate to the identified shipment.

Reconcile documents before shipment

A working file may contain evidence of exporter eligibility, source and ownership records, laboratory and weight information, contracts and invoices, official valuation or inspection evidence where applicable, consignment authorisation, customs records and transport details. The exact mandatory list must be verified for the specific transaction with the authorities and appointed specialists.

Check that the exported quantity and description agree with the documents, that every party is identified consistently and that there are no unexplained changes in the lot after examination.

Coordinate destination and payment conditions

The receiving market may have its own customs, precious-metals, sanctions and responsible-sourcing checks. Agree who will obtain import-side advice. Set settlement terms early, including any escrow agent, financial institution, acceptance evidence and dispute procedure. Avoid last-minute payments to newly introduced third parties on the basis of informal assurances.

Bilex enquiries

The exporter of record and the permissions applicable to each shipment must be confirmed before export. Bilex does not issue government export approvals.
